Playing a superhero may sound like fun, but there are hardships attached to such a role. Hollywood’s biggest stars put in hard work to suit up as iconic comic book heroes, and Amber Heard has discovered what kind of sacrifices come with playing a DC Comics heroine. The actress is set to play Mera, one of Aquaman‘s classic female leads. And, now, fans can also get a look into how hard Heard has trained for the role.

Recently, trainer Gunnar Peterson spoke with People magazine about the work he’s put Heard through because of Aquaman. The fitness fiend opened up about how hard Heard has trained for her superhero role, and Peterson says the star is a bonafide athlete at this point.

“She wanted to deliver for the character,” Peterson explained. The trainer went on to say Heard trained with him 4-5 times a week “for a non-stop, no-breaks hour with me, and THEN she went to her fight training, which was rigorous!”

According to Peterson, the pair focused on full-body fitness rather than sculpting.

“Everything was athletically based. We trained movements, not muscles,” Peterson recalled. “Squat presses, sled work and lots of work in a rotational plane against resistance. She is a true athlete.”

The workouts Heard endured for training were described as “unrelenting” by Peterson, but the trainer said the star handled them well. Peterson credits the actress and her dedication to Mera for getting Heard through the melee routines.

Later this year, fans will get to see Heard debut her take on Mera in Justice League. The actress will then reprise the role in Aquaman as she is currently filming the standalone in Australia.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroesโ€”Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flashโ€”it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Ciarรกn Hinds (Steppenwolf), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon), Amber Heard (Mera), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West) and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor).

The DCEU continues when Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
