Transformers: The Last Knight is more than the latest installment of the Michael Bay franchise. Bay’s final chapter of the saga is actually the springboard to a much bigger Transformers movie universe, which is already being filled with additional sequels and some big prequel spinoffs.

Helping to guide this expansion of the Transformers cinematic universe is producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who sat down with Comicbook.com at the press day for Transformers: The Last Knight, to talk about a particularly big reveal in the film, that will have major impact on the franchise’s next chapter.

You can read on or watch the video above for di Bonaventura’s thoughts on where the Transformers movie franchise is headed after the revelations of The Last Knight – but be warned, MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW!

A New World Opens

One of several big twists inย Transformers: The Last Knightย is the revelation that Earth, itself, is actually a planet-sized Transformer – an ancient Transformers God known as Unicron.ย

Unicronย is one of the most famous and iconic villains in the franchise – and was the “big bad” featured in the 1986ย Transformerย animated movie. This movie version of Unicronย is certainly a new take – but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventuraย thinks it’s the key to opening many, many, new doors to a big, wide,ย Transformersย movie universe.ย

When we asked di Bonaventuraย where things go from here, he had the following response:

One of the things we discovered in trying to do this movie was we can open the mythology to a lot more things. And so in this one we get Arthurian Legend. Unicron gets… It’s more the tease of Unicron than it is really the face of it.

On every movie we’re trying to give the fans things they love about the series. Unicron was obviously something that the fans wanted to have us acknowledge, and I think we can almost go anywhere now – now that we’ve been able to figure out we can go to the Middle Ages; we can go to World War II, you know. So I think it’s going to be really opening up the series.
