Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman, having just crossed over the $600 million threshold at the global box office, is set to overtake Mamma Mia! as the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman.

Mamma Mia!, a 2008 musical based on the hit stage play and featuring music by global pop phenomenon ABBA, was directed by Phyllida Lloyd, whose only other theatrical release was the 2011 Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady. That film was made for a fraction of Mamma Mia!‘s budget, but went on to earn “just” $120 million at the global box office.
Wonder Woman is expected to eclipse the milestone today, and by Monday is likely to surpass Man of Steel‘s box global box office haul as well. Domestically, the film may pass Man of Steel as early as today and could cruise by Iron Man and Suicide Squad by the end of the weekend.
Wonder Woman has been bolstered by strong reviews and great word-of-mouth, which have helped to minimize the week-to-week drop that film is experiencing at the box office. Batman v Superman, for instance, had one of the biggest opening weekends of all time but fell precipitously each of the next two weeks. Wonder Woman‘s percentage drop is as low as Thor, but Thor opened smaller and had a smaller budget — meaning that the overall dollar totals are piling up much faster for the Amazing Amazon.
