Thanks in part to their huge Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Can, fans were treated a second trailer for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, due out this September.

The second trailer us our first looks at characters such as Fenris Wolf and Surtur and although we got our first look at Skurge the Executioner (Karl Urban) in the first trailer, we got a few extra shots of the character in this new release.

The biggest thing of note is the fact that it appears that Skurge is acting as an agent of Hela (Cate Blanchett), making it a big twist to the character’s comic book origins and the actor behind the Executioner has a reasonable explanation as to why.

“When we find Skurge, he’s operating the Bifrost because Heimdall is missing in action, and then pretty soon after that Hela shows up,” Urban told IGN. “Skurge sees the writing on the wall and has to make a decision whether to die or join her, so his instincts of self-preservation take over.”

While the character has been a long-time antagonist of Thor’s in the comics, he joined his fellow Asgardians on several occasions to help prevent Ragnarok, the Asgardian apocalypse.

There’s always a chance that Skurge could simply be saving face in the short term and ends up helping the good guys before the movie ends, but we’ll have to wait until Ragnarok premieres in November to see.
