Ahead of the character’s first solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Black Panther made his debut in Captain America: Civil War. In that movie, his father was killed and T’Challa had to assume the throne and become the King of Wakanda.

Fans might be wondering where the new movie will pick up considering we’ve only heard murmurs about the isolated African nation in movies like Age of Ultron and Civil War, and now it will be featured front and center.
We caught up with star Chadwick Boseman at San Diego Comic-Con after Marvel’s wonderful Hall H presentation, where Boseman gave us some key details about the circumstances of Black Panther.
“Because I lost my father in Civil War, you pick up with the unrest of Wakanda because of that and T’Challa trying to take on the throne,” Boseman said. “Some of Wakanda is not necessarily cool with that.”

T’Challa won’t have a lot of time to settle the unrest in his nation given the nature of Avengers: Infinity War being a global affair. Wakanda is sure to be embroiled in the battle against Thanos — as evidenced by the teaser shown at D23 and SDCC — and he’ll have to unify his people in order to stand a chance against the invading alien force.
Black Panther is set to premiere February 16, 2018.
