With all of the buzz around Spawn coming back to cinemas, San Diego Comic-Con also revealed that a big reunion is coming for the Spawn comics.

That reunion will occur in the form of Todd McFarlane coming back to the book in a big way. He revealed as much at Comic-Con in a chat with ComicBook.com’s Jim Viscardi, also teasing how close Spawn is to a huge record.

“We’re two years away from Spawn being issue 300, that will tie Cerebus for the longest, and then #301 it becomes the longest running independent comic book in the history of America, so that’s still going to happen, and so at some point once I’m done playing in all of these other sorts of ponds, I’ll come back on a full time basis and then probably die at the board.

McFarlane has been quite successful in all of those other ponds, including the mammoth McFarlane Toys brand. He always knew though it would come back to comics eventually.

“Here’s what I’ve always said. I think my life, my career will go full circle, right. I started as a comic book guy and then I started branching off and doing all of this art stuff and started other companies, and now we’re starting to do some stuff that’s getting some traction in Hollywood.”

Even though he’ll be back on full-time art and story duties, it won’t be the same McFarlane at the board.

“The fun then will be that I won’t be chasing the same things I did when I was a kid, which is your career, money, all the things that matter when you’re 20. But we’ve got spinoff books that we’re doing and I’m going to do another Spawn Kills Everyone which did pretty well for us.”

Spawn will be coming from Blumhouse, makers of The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and The Belko Experiment. The budget will be in the $10 million range, and no release date has been announced.

As for the comics, Spawn #276 just hit stores, which is written by Darragh Savage and Jason Shawn Alexander with Alexander also providing the issue’s art. The description can be found below.

“DARK HORROR,” Part One An even darker new chapter in the SPAWN saga begins with a new creative team! Art by Eisner-nominated illustrator JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER, and story by DARRAGH SAVAGE & ALEXANDER (EMPTY ZONE). On the other side of the world in Tokyo, a dark conspiracy is unleashed. An old enemy resurfaces. To combat this evil, Spawn will evolve NEW POWERS in order to inflict the same HORROR, pain, and destruction as Hell has done to him over the years.
