Today has been a whirlwind for anyone who’s a fan of the DC Extended Universe. Deadline just broke the stunning news that Warner Bros. is developing a standalone movie about the Joker with DC Films, but Jared Leto will not star in the feature. However, if the website is right, then the actor will still have a chance to reprise his deranged role in other features.

According to Deadline, Leto is expected to bring his Joker back for two more DCEU flicks. The actor “will reprise in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff,” but Leto will not be asked to carry over the character to this new Joker standalone film.

Of course, fans have hoped Leto would return for the Suicide Squad sequel. Recently, the actor was asked whether he would reprise the iconic Batman role anytime soon, but Leto kept mum when he spoke with ET Canada about the possibility.

“Talking about Joker is like talking about ‘Fight Club’: unless you want to gargle your testicles, it’s probably better to leave it,” Leto said. “He’s liable to jump out of the cupboard and just start having fun.”

Leto’s talk with ET Canada isn’t the only time the actor trolled fans about the possibility of his Joker’s return. The actor shared a similar teaser with ET Online back in June about the villain’s comeback.

“I have no idea. I can’t confirm… maybe I know, but I can’t confirm nor deny. There are a lot of moving parts with that stuff and we’ll see what happens next,” he trailed off.

Still, there were plenty of fans who were concerned about Leto’s return to the DCEU. After all, the actor did publicly question Suicide Squad after the film premiered last year. The movie received mixed reviews from fans, and critics were quick to slam the disjointed blockbuster. Leto’s bit as the Joker was relegated to a mismatched cameo at times, and the actor told BBC Radio 5 he had regrets about the feature.

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene that it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie,” Leto explained. “If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out.”

Continuing, the actor also bemoaned the film’s tame rating. “I always wished this film was Rated R, and I had actually said that when we were starting that if a film was ever going to be rated R it should be the one about the villains.”

As for Gotham City Sirens, fans had a feeling Leto might show up as the Joker in the Harley Quinn spin-off. The film is expected to introduce new characters such as Catwoman and Poison Ivy to the DCEU. David Ayer will direct the spin-off following his Suicide Squad stint, and Leto did seem to have a good relationship with the director. There will be several opportunities for Leto to exercise his take on the Joker before another actor is tasked with bringing the Gotham villain to life. So, if you have been wanting to see what the actor could really do with the role when given free reign, you will soon find out.
