If audiences thought the first season of Riverdale took a dark turn then they should brace themselves for things to get downright terrifying.

Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica Lodge on The CW show, said in an interview with People that the first season with the central mystery of who killed Jason Blossom was something of a test to see just how far they could go.

“Expect things to get even darker. In season one, we were testing the waters, and in season two, we’re really diving in. We’ve fully submerged ourselves into the thriller genre, and the obstacles that our characters will face are terrifying,” Mendes said.

While that description sounds ominous, it isn’t the first hint that fans have gotten that season two would take a far darker turn. The first season finale ended in a shocking cliffhanger with Archie and his dad Fred getting breakfast at Pop’s when a masked gunman arrived. The confrontation ended with a shot ringing out, the gunman escaping and Archie cradling his dad as he bled out on the diner’s floor.

And if that wasn’t enough of a clue about the tone of the upcoming season two, a promotional poster might show the cast intact, but the Pop’s sign in the background not so subtly spells out the world “die.”

But even if things aren’t looking good for the residents of Riverdale fans will have relationship drama to look forward to as well. As was previously reported, Vanessa Morgan is joining the cast as Toni Topaz, a possible rival for Betty when it comes to Jughead’s affection.

Riverdale returns for its second season on October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
