Of all the superhero shows on The CW, Supergirl has a loud and dedicated following that tend to cherish character development over superpowered fisticuffs. And one of the highlights for fans has been the relationship between Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer.

The chemistry between actors Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima has caused fans to affectionately refer to the two as “Sanvers,” but unfortunately that relationship won’t be lasting long into Supergirl Season Three.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the two characters and how they hope to honor the relationship while writing Maggie out of the show.

“Well, unfortunately, Floriana decided to move on, which left us with, how do we write her out as a regular while still honoring these two women who were deeply in love with each other?” said Kreisberg. “Taking a page out of some of our own personal dating history, we’ve come up with a story that we really feel like honors what’s come before them, and honors how much they love each other, and how much they mean to each other, and how much they’ve changed each other’s lives.”

Fans are likely going to be upset at the change in the show, which has portrayed Sanvers as one of the most positive and loving relationships in the entire series.

“It’s some of the most emotional stuff we’ve ever done, and Floriana has been so good in these first five episodes,” Kreisberg said, hinting at how long the actor will remain on the series.

“Episode 3 is all about Maggie and her dad, played by Carlos Bernard, and it’s some of the most heartbreaking stuff I’ve ever done on anything I’ve ever done,” Kreisberg said. “Maggie does not die. I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that. Maggie will continue to exist in the world and if the opportunity presents itself for her, she’ll come back.”

It sounds like they’ll put Maggie in a difficult situation, and dramas rarely tend to take it easy on the characters when they actually find happiness.

This will leave Alex and Kara in a similar place, as Supergirl said goodbye to her boyfriend in the Season Two finale and will dive into her role as protector of National City as a result. But with the two sisters going through similar troubles, they’ll be brought closer together.

“One of the things we’ve been doing a lot this season is getting back a little bit to season 1 and really making it Danvers sisters-centric, so a lot of what’s going on this season is Kara and Alex doing things in tandem,” Kreisberg said, hinting that they’d play a major role in the crossover with Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.

Hopefully fans don’t take the end of Sanvers too hard.

Supergirl returns to The CW next week on Monday, October 9.
