Watch This Footage From The Cancelled Superman Open World Game

Superman has had a rough history when it comes to video games, but back in 2007 Brash entertainment and Factor 5 were attempting to bring their vision of the Man of Steel to fruition.

Before Bryan Singer's Superman Returns sequel was abandoned, Brash Entertainment and Factor 5 were attempting to create a video game companion that really made the player feel as if he or she was Superman. This involved fully destructible environments, and as can be seen in the test video footage above, the battles themselves would weave in and out of various buildings and landmarks, taking the fight all over the city.

It is certainly a great idea, but it hit a snag when the film project was canned. The game then turned into a more general take on the character, pulling inspiration from the comics and the previous films. Unfortunately, like the film, it too was abandoned, never to be released.

There's a lot of great stuff in the full video, and it confirms two things. One, Superman Returns the game has not aged well at all, though an argument could be made that it already looked dated when it released. Two, some of the concept art is fantastic, especially their take on Darkseid and Brainiac. Maybe one day we'll actually get a game worthy of the Man of Steel, but in the meantime enjoy some of the art and screens in the gallery.
