This weekend, fans watched as Attack on Titan wrapped its second season with one massive episode. The finale picked up with Eren Yeager and Mikasa as the pair stared down an estranged foe. The Smiling Titan made its return after devouring Eren’s mother Carla years ago, but the brutalized soldiers were in no shape to fight the beast. The duo were saved from fighting with another soldier stepped in to give Eren and Mikasa, but the decision ended with Hannes’ death.
After the Smiling Titan made its advance on Eren and Mikasa, Hannes stepped in to take on the monster. The soldier may not have been active for some years, but Hannes wanted to get revenge against the Titan which took his friend’s life so many years ago. Eren and Mikasa could only watch as their mentor and father-figure lost ground against the vicious Titan before he was caught by the beast. On the ground, Eren was seen desperately gnawing at his hand to draw enough blood to turn into his Titan form, but he was unable to do so. In the end, Eren and Mikasa could only watch as their friend was eaten before their eyes.
For fans, the death of Hannes was a hard one to watch. The garrison member acted as comedic relief to a overtly dour story. The aftermath of the event was also difficult to process as it saw Eren nearly go mad with grief. The boy could only beat the ground and look at his disfigured hand with tears in his eyes. The hero convinced himself that he hadn’t changed after being helpless in the face of his mom’s death. Some well-timed words from Mikasa stopped Eren from giving himself entirely to grief, and the speech spurred the boy onto discovering a newfound power which lead to the Smiling Titan’s demise.
