‘Dragon Ball Super’: How Can Goku Master His New Form?

Dragon Ball Super may have given Goku a new transformation this past weekend, but fans still have plenty of questions about the power-up. The Saiyan gained the new form during his battle with Jiren after Goku had a run-in with a Spirit Bomb. Fans watched as Goku unleashed an insane power-up known as Ultra Instinct, but the hero wasn’t versed well enough with the form to beat Jiren.

Still, the Universe 7 warrior has a good shot of taking the Pride Trooper down if he can get a handle on Ultra Instinct. There’s just one problem with that: it is hard to master the technique.

In the past, Whis has explained that Ultra Instinct is a form that even the gods have trouble keeping under control. The angel may have handle on the power-up, but Whis admits Beerus is still trying to master the form. Goku only just tapped into the power for the first time, but fans seem to think they have an idea of how Goku can make Ultra Instinct in his favor.

It’s just going to take a lot of practice or the right kind of motivation.

Battery Recharge

The most pressing issue about Goku and his Ultra Instinct power has to do with his energy supply. The hero has plenty of stamina working in his favor, but Goku was running low on power by the time Jiren stepped to him. The pair’s match basically drained him of energy, and Goku only got a second go at the Pride Trooper when the energy of his rebuked Spirit Bomb fell upon him.

Whis and the other gods noted the heat Goku gave off after being hit by his own Spirit Bomb was key to his power, but the Saiyan cannot backfire that attack every time he wants to go Ultra Instinct. Goku will need to find a way to use his own power reserves to trigger his entrance into the form, giving the hero the ability to control and regulate the power he’s outputting.

Careful With That Ki

Dragon Ball Super has not shown Ultra Instinct being used outside of Whis or the gods, so no one knows how Goku may wield the form. The anime saw the Saiyan use it to dodge all of Jiren’s attacks, but there is something Goku must do if he wants to match the Universe 11 fighter’s level.

Goku has got to get a handle on his ki and emotions.

For Saiyans, emotions are an integral part of their power; The angrier they get, the stronger they will become. Ultra Instinct will help filter some of Goku’s irrational actions out, but Jiren has his meditation game on-lock. Goku will need to exercise more control over his impassioned personality if he wants to fully master Ultra Instinct like Whis.

However, Goku must first learn to perfect his ki. The manga of Dragon Ball Super did show that Goku had perfected his Super Saiyan Blue form, giving him the massive ki which gods have without it leaking out of his every pore. Jiren has also found a way to hide his ki’s true potential, but Goku has not learned how to withdraw all his ki’s power at once. The gods noticeably started when Jiren brought his out and shaped it in both defensive and offensive ways. Goku will need to gain instinctive control of his ki in the anime if he wants to test his limits. And, once that control is paired with Ultra Instinct, then Goku will be a fighter Jiren should rightfully fear.
