Even if you hate them, there are a handful of Dragon Ball characters who audiences keep coming back to. Today, we’re looking back at five of anime‘s biggest characters who fans just love to hate. So, take a seat and don your firefighting gear; You are about to enter flame war territory.
Pan
Poor Pan! The girl never really stood a chance against fans of Dragon Ball. The character was introduced at the very end of Dragon Ball Z, but it wasn’t until Dragon Ball GT rolled in that Pan got a bad reputation. The controversial anime ushered in a preteen Pan who was wholly dramatic and had a penchant for temper-tantrums. Despite being the daughter of Gohan and Videl, Pan could not keep herself together during much of the anime, and fans grew tired of her unpredictable mood swings. And, for years now, fans have wondered just how Vegeta got along with the young Saiyan without taking her out with an energy blast.

Chichi
Over the years, Chichi has gone from being a beloved female character in the Dragon Ball series to a squawking caricature of herself. The no-nonsense woman may always have the best of intentions, but fans have grown tired of Chichi’s incessant nagging. Whether she’s berating Goku or nosing down Goten for not studying like his elder brother, fans all but expect Chichi to talk only about money and private tutors these days.

Gotenks
There are plenty of powerful fusions in the Dragon Ball world, and fans would be amiss to overlook the strength Gotenks carries. The form, which combines both Goten and Trunks, is unbelievably strong and was first introduced back in Dragon Ball Z. The fusion made its debut as the two half-Saiyans took on Majin Buu, and its introduction would’ve been great. You know, if it weren’t for the fact that Gotenks has no maturity at all. Fans watched as the impossibly powerful duo took on one of the franchise’s most feared baddies without even trying, and fans were not the least bit sad with Buu schooled Gotenks and their over-inflated ego.

Yamcha
Yamcha may not be one of the most hated characters in the Dragon Ball franchise, but he is the most mocked. Having been around since Dragon Ball, the human martial artist has a long history of bumbling failures. Yamcha may have been intimidating to Goku when he was little, but there’s no reason for the Saiyan to consider Yamcha an equal match in fighting anymore. By the time Dragon Ball Z rolled around, fans were content to crack jokes about Yamcha and his flagging power levels. Today, those jokes have only continued, and Yamcha’s inability to stay alive has only made his plight that much worse.

Broly
Without a doubt, Broly is the most divisive character in Dragon Ball history. If you were to mention his name to the wrong person, you might just get a black eye. When it comes down to it, there’s no rhyme or pattern for fans hating or loving Broly; It just is, and the character will never be able to retire as such. Known as a Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly was introduced to fans through the non-canon Dragon Ball Z films, and he quickly became popular due to his stature and power. However, over the years, Dragon Ball purists have started to push back against the character’s ‘over-rated’ storylines and all but demanded he be scrubbed from history. However, there are plenty of fans don’t think Broly causes any harm to the Dragon Ball canon, and fan wars are still be held to this day about whether the villain should even exist.
If you ever get sucked into one of those debates, you should know this: you may never come back out. And, if you do, then you might never be the same again.ย
