April 1st marks the 20th anniversary of first airing of the Pokemon anime. While Ash hasn’t aged during the last 20 years, he’s collected plenty of memorable partners during his many travels through the Pokemon world. Some of those Pokemon have stayed with Ash for years, while others have left their trainer to pursue their own dreams and goals.

ComicBook is going to run through all of Ash’s Pokemon one region at a time. In our first installment, we’re going to look at Ash’s original Pokemon, the ones he met during his journey through the Kanto and Orange Island regions.
Pikachu
First Met:ย At Professor Oak’s lab.
Notable Accomplishments:ย Too manyย Gym Victories to count; is the only one of Ash’s Pokemonย to beat two Legendary Pokemon
Currently at:ย Ash’s side, of course!
Ash’s primary partner and best friend, Pikachu is the only Pokemon to appear in every episode of theย Pokemonย anime.ย Pikachuย is a surprisingly capable battler, frequently overcoming type and power disadvantages to win impossible battles. Relatively early on in the series, Pikachuย beat a Dragoniteย to help Ash win his only Pokemonย League championship. He’s also beaten two Legendary Pokemon,ย a Regice and Latios, in official battles.ย
ย
Butterfree
First Met:ย In Viridianย Forest, as a Caterpie
Notable Accomplishments:ย Was the first Pokemonย Ash caught, was also the first Pokemonย Ash released
Currently at:ย Raising a family somewhere in the Kantoย region
Butterfreeย was the first Pokemonย Ash caught in the wild, right at theย start of the third episode of series. Caterpieย quickly evolved into a Metapod and then into a Butterfreeย in consecutive episodes. Ash usually used Butterfree’sย various spore attacks in battle, either to stun an opponent or put it to sleep. Ash eventually let Butterfreeย go when it fell in love with a pink Butterfreeย andย wanted to raise a family. When Brock explained that Butterfreeย had a short mating window, Ash let his second Pokemonย go to start a family.ย
Pidgeot
First Met:ย In Viridianย Forestn as a Pidgeotto
Notable Accomplishments:ย Blew away a lot of Team Rocket smokescreens, was Ash’s primary flying Pokemonย through theย Kantoย region
Currently at:ย Hanging around Pallet Town, protecting wild Pidgey from Fearowย attacks
Pidgeottoย was the first Pokemonย Ash caught after a Pokemonย battle, as Pikachu weakened the Flying Pokemonย prior to catching it. During Ash’s first trip through the Kantoย region, Pidgeottoย was Ash’s eyes in the sky and was most often used for scouting purposes. While Pidgeottoย never won a gym battle, Ash considered Pidgeottoย to be one of his most loyal Pokemon.
When Ash returned to Pallet Town after his first Pokemonย League loss, he discovered that the Spearowย who attacked Ash and Pikachuย on his first day had evolved into a Fearowย and was now harassing the local flocks of Pidgey. Pidgeottoย evolved into a Pidgeotย to defeat Fearow, and Ash left it behind to guard Pallet Town from his old foes. While Ash promised to come back for Pidgeot, the loyal bird Pokemonย has never appeared again.ย
Bulbasaur
First Met:ย Aย Hidden Pokemonย Village
Notable Accomplishments:ย Used in the Indigo and Silver League Conferences, helped Ash win the Kantoย Battle Frontier
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s lab
Ash met Bulbasaur at a Hidden Village between Cerulean City and Vermillionย City. The gruff Bulbasaurย acted as the village’s protector, rescuing weaker Pokemonย from trainers and other threats. After Bulbasaurย got to know Ash, he chose to join Ash as he continued his Kantoย journeys. Bulbasaurย formed a close relationship with Pikachuย and Squirtle, the latter of which was considered his best friend.ย
Bulbasaurย was one of Ash’s core Pokemonย through both the Kantoย and Johtoย regions, even after Bulbasaur’sย original companions had all left Ash’s side for more training.ย With the departures of Butterfree and Pidgeotย from Ash’s team, Bulbasaurย is now Ash’s second oldest Pokemon.
Currently, Bulbasaurย acts as an assistant of sorts to Professor Oak, helping to keep the peace between Ash’s various Pokemonย and the other Pokemonย that live at Oak’s lab.ย
Charizard
First Met:ย On Route 24, as a Charmander
Notable Accomplishments:ย Beat Koga’sย Golbatย for the Soul Badge, beat Falkner’sย Pidgeotย for the Zephyr Badge, beat Clair’s Dragonair for the Rising Badge, beat Gary’s Blastoise to held Ash advance in the Silver Conference, was the first one of Ash’s Pokemonย to beat a Legendary Pokemon
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s lab
Charizardย is probably Ash’s best known Pokemonย outside of Pikachu. Not only is Charizardย the undeniable powerhouse of Ash’s team, it has also made more cameo appearances and returns than any other Pokemon. Ash met Charizardย as a Charmander when his old trainer abandoned it for being too weak. Ash convinced Charmanderย to join him instead, and Charmanderย quickly became a reliable and loyalย Pokemonย in Ash’s rotation.ย
After several big victories, Charmanderย evolved into Charmeleonย and seemed to lose its loyalty to Ash. Even after it evolved in Charizardย to save Ash from an Aerodactyl, the Pokemonย only listened to Ash when fighting against other Fire Pokemon.ย
Eventually, Charizardย came to trust Ash again in the Orange Island and became Ash’s reliable “ace in the hole.” Even after Ash left Charizardย behind in theย Charicificย Valley for more training, Charizardย has returned for most of Ash’s biggest battles. Eventually, Charizardย returned to Oak’s lab, where he now current resides.ย
Squirtle
First Met:ย On Routeย 25
Notable Accomplishments:ย Participated in the Indigo and Silver Pokemonย Leagues, helped Ash win his final Battle Frontier badgeย
Currently at:ย Leading the Squirtleย Squad
Ash found his Squirtleย when he came across a Pokemonย gang known as the Squirtleย Squad. Team Rocket tricked the Squirtleย Squad into helping them on their eternal quest to capture Pikachu and then betrayed them as soon as Pikachuย was in their clutches. In the chaos that followed, Ash saved the leader of the Squirtleย Squad from an explosion, which led to the Squirtleย Squad reforming AND the leader joining Ash’s team.
Squirtleย was one of Ash’s regular fighters and was good friends with both Pikachuย and Bulbasaur. Squirtleย was particularly useful in the Orange Islands, as many of the contests and battles there were water-themed.ย
Squirtleย eventually returned to the Squirtleย Squad, but still considers himself to be Ash’s Pokemon. Ash has recalled Squirtleย several times, typically for some of his biggest battles.ย
Kingler
First Met:ย On Routeย 25
Notable Accomplishments:ย Swept through Mandi’s Pokemonย to earn Ash a first round victory in the Indigo League, used by Ash in the Whirl Cup water tournament
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s lab
Kingler was the first of Ash’s Pokemonย to spend most of its time at Professor Oak’s lab.ย When Ash captured a random Krabby, its PokeBall automatically teleported away as Ash already had six PokeBalls. Ash decided to randomly use Krabbyย in his opening battle at the Indigo League over Misty and Brock’s protests. While Krabbyย was quickly overwhelmed, it evolved into Kinglerย and proceeded to lay waste to all of its opponents.ย
Ash hasn’t used Kinglerย very much, although it does seem happy to see Ash whenever he returns to Pallet Town.ย
Muk
First Met:ย Gringeyย City
Notable Accomplishments:ย Beat Jeanette’s Bellsprout to help Ash advance in the Indigo League, helped Ash beat Gary in the Silver Conference League
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s Lab
Ash captured Muk when the Pokemonย led a coordinated attack on Gringeyย City’s power plant, but immediately sent it to Professor Oak as its smell permeated its PokeBall. Although Mukย made cameo appearances whenever Ash called Professor Oak, he didn’tย actually use Mukย in battle until he reached the Indigo League. Ash has only used Mukย a handful of times, as the Pokemonย is geared more towards defense and has very few offensive abilities. Muk’s sole win came in the Indigo League, when it sat on Jeanette’s super-powerful Bellsproutย to get Ash a victory.ย
Primeape
First Met:ย Route 7
Notable Accomplishments:ย Won the G1 Grand Prix
Currently at:ย Training with a Fighting Pokemon specialist
Ash’s Primeapeย holds the record for having the least amount of appearances of any Pokemon. Primeapeย only appears twice: in the episode in which Ash catches him, and then in the episode that Ash leaves Primeapeย behind for more training.ย
Ash caught Primeapeย after the Pokemon stole its hat as a Mankey and then evolved, turning into a rage filled beast. After running roughshod on Ash’s team, Charmander finally put Primeapeย down so Ash could catch him.ย
A short time later, Ash used Primeapeย in the G1 Grand Prixย fighting tournament. After bonding with Ash and winning the tournament, Ash inexplicably left Primeapeย behind to train and then never saw it again. Classy, Ash.ย
Tauros
First Met: The Safari Zone (as a herd)
Notable Accomplishments: Used in the Orange Island Winner’s Cup, the Johto League, and Battle Frontier
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s Lab (as a herd)
Many people forget that Ash had almost 40 Pokemon by the time he reached the Indigo League tournament. That’s because the episode in which Ash caught 30 Tauros was never shown in the US because it featured actual guns, which was seen as inappropriate for children.
So, Ash has a herd of Tauros that hang out at Professor Oak’s lab, some of which he occasionally uses in battle. Ash has called upon his Tauros in several League battles and has actually won a few times with Tauros on his team. It’s impossible to tell if he uses the same Tauros every time, or if he’s just interchangably pulling Tauros from his herd. What we do know is that they always merrily stampede towards him whenever he returns to Professor Oak’s lab.ย
Lapras
First Met:ย On Tangelo Island (in the Orange Islands)ย
Notable Accomplishments:ย Transported Ash, Misty, and Tracey throughout the Orange Islands, never won an official Pokemonย battle
Currently at:ย Somewhere in the ocean, leading a herd of Lapras
When Ash and Misty headed to the Orange Islands, they planned on only staying for a few days. On their way back from running an errand for Professor Oak, their blimp landed on an island where they discovered a lost Lapras. Ash rescued the Laprasย and found out about the Orange League at the same time. He quickly decided to compete in the Orange League and reunite Laprasย with its herd at the same time.ย
Laprasย primarily was a mode of transport first, but he did use it in several Orange League competitions. Notably, Laprasย took out Drake’s Gengar in the Orange League finals, although it was also knocked out as well.ย
Eventually, Ash and Misty found Lapras’sย herd and rescued it from Team Rocket. They briefly met up with Laprasย in the Johtoย region and discovered it was now the leader of its herd, having learned superior survival and battling skills from its time with Ash.ย
ย
Snorlax
First Met:ย On Routeย 25
Notable Accomplishments:ย Won battles against Gary and Harrison in the Silver Conference, won the Sumo Conference, helped Ash in the Battle Frontier, participated in the Lily in the Valley Conference
Currently at:ย Professor Oak’s lab
Ash picked up a second powerful Pokemonย when it caught a Snorlax in the Orange Islands. Ash found the Snorlaxย swimming between a series of small islands to terrorize a series of grapefruit orchards. Although Snorlaxย shrugged off every physical attack thrown its way, it was no match for Jigglypuff’sย Sing attack. After Snorlaxย fell asleep, Ash captured it using a powerful Thunder attack from Pikachu.
Although Ash didn’t use Snorlaxย much in the Orange Islands, it turned into an ace in the hole during his later adventures. Ash used Snorlaxย to overcome deficits against Clair, Gary, and Harrison in Johto, and later used the powerful Pokemonย to singlehandedlyย win a Frontier Badge.ย
Unfortunately, Snorlax’sย appetite prevented it from ever becoming part of Ash’s permanent team. Snorlaxย simply cost too much to feed, so Ash passed it off to Professor Oak after they left the Orange Islands.
