When it comes to anime and manga, few series are as well known as Attack on Titan. The story made its debut back in 2009 before Wit Studio gave it an acclaimed anime adaptation in 2013. Creator Hajime Isayama has been a steadfast rock with the story as he stares down gory scenes with a deft pen. Still, there are times when the artist doesn’t fill up to snuff, and Isayama shared such a moment with fans not too long ago.

In the past, Isayama held a signing event for fans in Tochigi, and the artist felt he didn’t represent his art well at the meet-and-greet. The creator signed about 100 autographs during the ordeal, and he tried to let is go. However, some of Isayama’s remarks about the event have now started to make their way around the Internet.

At the time, Isayama said he was very nervous about the event and did not feel confident in his skills. The artist could only offer deformed caricatures of Attack on Titan‘s leads, and he straight-up refused to do any inkings of Eren. Isayama took to his blog to lament about the event as it upset him. The artist apologized to fans for his poor showing, and Isayama recalled how much self-doubt he carried at that time.

Still, the creator stressed he was grateful for the event overall. The opportunity allowed him to meet with fans, and Isayama said his throat rather than his hands hurt by the signing’s end. By the end, the artist wound up drawing 70 takes on Levi and even a handful of Titans.

You can check out some of the drawings which Isayama drew in the gallery below!
