In just a handful of days, fans will finally say goodbye to piece of anime history. The end of March will usher in the final episode of Naruto Shippuden, wrapping up the show’s 10+ run. Fans of Masashi Kishimoto’s series are sad to watch Naruto Uzumaki’s adventures come to an end, but they won’t be separated from the ninja for long. No, their gaping loss will be filled in by a brand-new spin-out series titled Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

The sequel anime will be set after the end of Kishimoto’s shonen manga, and it will follow its titular character Boruto Uzumaki. Of course, the protagonist has been shown to fans before as Boruto headed up a recent film alongside his colorful genin team. The movie followed the preteen hero as he geared up for the Chunin Exams and finally confronted his father about Naruto’s lack of parenting. But, when Boruto: Naruto Next Generations makes its debut, the anime will feature a much different timeline.
Recently, the director of the Boruto anime spoke with Animedia about the show and its particulars. It was there that Noriyuki Abe explained exactly when the spin-off was set.
“The tale begins a little before the events of the movie,” Abe revealed. “The movie occurs when Boruto, Sarada and Mitsuki are in a three-man cell and undertaking the Chuunin Exams, but the TV series will begin from when they enroll into the Academy. After graduating and forming their three-man cell, gaining experience and challenging the Chuunin Exams is the approximate timeline.”
“It seems that Sarada and Mitsuki are going to have a more developed relationship from now on,” Abe continued. “In the beginning, they are merely classmates with Sarada being an unsociable girl, and Mitsuki having an unreadable atmosphere around him.”
