I know the first installment of Netflix’s Death Note isn’t even out yet, however, director Adam Wingard is already talking about a potential sequel. Early reviews of the film have not been great so far and anime fans are usually quite critical when it comes to live-action adaptation. However, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wingard has started to talk quite confidently about a sequel.

“When I first pitched the movie to Netflix, that was my main thing. This film is very much an origin story and there’s a lot of different places we can take it. The movie really works as a closed loop. But I think ultimately it is a great property to explore. There’s a lot of things that could happen from here. I would love to [be involved]. I am doing Godzilla vs Kong now, so that’s, like, two-and-a-half-years at least, so it depends on the timing. Depending on when they want to do it, I would definitely be involved in terms of the story and all that kind of stuff,” said Wingard.
However, despite Wingard’s initial thoughts about a sequel, his vision may be destroyed after early reviews for Wingard’s Death Note have been released and they have not been flattering. IndieWire, Slashfilm and The Wrap have slammed the film, calling it a “Whitewashed Waste of Time,” as well as ” A Thoughtless and Lazy adaptation of the Acclaimed Mang,” all of which reduces the chances of a sequel if things don’t change upon release.
Wingard’s live-action version of Death Note will be released on Netflix from August 25th. Wingard’d Death Note was inspired by Japanese manga illustrator Tsugumi Ohba’s work, which has also inspired an animated series, a number of animated films, a Japanese live-action adaptation and several games, since its release in Shueisha’s manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump in 2003.
