Let’s face it: fans aren’t going to like every Dragon Ball character they come up. The long-running franchise has been around for more than 30 years, and it has accrued hundreds of characters. The mythos of Dragon Ball could fill up volumes between its characters and factions, so it’s not surprising to learn that some heroes just get on fans’ nerves. In the past, guys like Yamcha or fusions such as Gotenks have made fans want to pull their hair out.

But, when it comes to the creator of Dragon Ball, the artist seems averse to one very important character.
In the past, Akira Toriyama has spoken briefly about his dislike of a certain Super Saiyan, and the comments continue to shock new fans. When the creator was interview years ago for the second Daizenshuu publication, Toriyama first dropped the bombshell admission on fans.
Yes, that’s right. Despite being one of Dragon Ball‘s leads, Toriyama doesn’t really like Vegeta.
When the artist was asked who is favorite characters were, Toriyama said Piccolo and Goku are about equal at his top spot. And, in the same response, the creator quickly said he was not Vegeta’s biggest fans.
“Out of all the enemies, Piccolo Daimaล is the one I like most, and even after that I like Piccolo the most. I like Piccolo about the same as I like Goku,” Toriyama said. “With Vegeta, well, I don’t like him all that much, but he was extremely helpful to have around.”
Of course, fans of Dragon Ball may be a bit confused by the statement. Vegeta is one of the franchise’s main characters as he is Goku’s sworn rival. Despite his anti-hero tendencies, Vegeta has stuck with Dragon Ball for years and has become an increasingly focal part of the new Dragon Ball Super anime. It could be that Toriyama’s distain has softened with time, but his attitude towards Vegeta is not wholly unreasonable.
After all, they don’t call Vegeta an anti-hero for any old reason. The somewhat reformed baddie has killed lots of people and isn’t the most altruistic of men. But, all the while, Vegeta has plenty of fans to spare even if Toriyama isn’t one of them.

Dragon Ball Super‘s”Universal Survival” saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
