It has been a long time coming, but Dragon Ball Super is finally about to introduce Goku to his next big rival. The anime entered its ‘Universal Survival’ arc back in February, and fans have been gearing up for the saga’s crescendo. The story is slated to lift its action once the Tournament of Power begins, and Universe 7 must win the event if they don’t want to be annihilated by the Omni-Kings. Goku is ready to spar with the rest of the multiverse, but he may have trouble beating out Universe 11’s top fighter.
And, now, it looks like the fighters are finally about to meet.
A preview for Dragon Ball Super‘s 96th episode has been released, and the fast-paced clip sees Goku meet Jiren. The Saiyan looks excited to come face-to-face with the Pride Trooper, but Jiren seems unaffected by Goku’s appearance. The hulking fighters are only shown in passing as the preview also features clips of Freeza, Vegeta, and even Champa as the Tournament of Power prepares to kick off.
If you can’t recall Jiren, then you have a bit to catch up on. The warrior hails from Universe 11 and is said to be that dimension’s most powerful fighter. Goku was shown Jiren briefly by the Old Kai when the god went over all of Universe 7’s formidable opponents, and Goku heard more about Jiren later on. During a round of exhibition matches, Toppo from Universe 11 told Goku that Jiren was much stronger than him. The Saiyan was already struggling against Toppo at that point, so Goku made it a goal to battle Jiren to satisfy his desire to fight.
For now, there is no telling when Goku and Jiren will get to go against one another, but the moment is coming soon. The intro to the ‘Universal Survival’ arc sees Goku go Super Saiyan Blue against the Pride Trooper, so the one-on-one match will be one to anticipate. Hopefully, Vegeta won’t grow too jealous of the match once it finally goes down.
The synopsis of Dragon Ball Super‘s current saga can be read here:
“According to an invitation that Goku gets, Zen-Oh (Omni King) is starting a martial arts tournament between all the universes called “Chikara no Taikai” (Tournament of Power). But it is the beginning of universal destruction. Something awaits the winners and losers of this tournament. What will become of this fierce team battle between each universe’s elite warriors?”
Dragon Ball Super‘s “Universal Survival” saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
