Warning: Spoilers Ahead for the One Piece Manga!
Videos by ComicBook.com
The One Piece manga is currently featuring the highly anticipated Elbaf Arc, where Luffy and his crew are just preparing to fight the Holy Knights. Before the battle begins, the story shifts its focus to Harald’s backstory as we follow his journey of becoming the most beloved king in Elbaf. The backstory first takes us to the tragic incident in the Aurust Castle 14 years ago when Loki and Jarul witnessed Harald’s death. However, instead of answering the reason behind Harald’s death, the story takes us further back into the past to cover his entire journey. Unexpectedly, the backstory doesn’t only focus on Harald, but also on the legendary pirate Rocks D. Xebec, who has a surprising connection with Blackbeard.
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) was introduced in the Jaya Arc and cemented his role as one of the most crucial villains in the story. This hasn’t changed even after more than two decades, as we learn one by one how utterly cruel and ambitious he is. Since the villain has always been shrouded in mystery, it’s time we finally learn more about him. The ongoing Elbaf Arc has only scratched the surface, and no doubt, there are a lot of shocking plot twists just waiting for us. Here’s what we know about the villain so far.
3) Blackbeard Is Rocks D. Xebec’s Son

Although there were several theories about Blackbeard being related to Rocks, the manga never confirmed it until the Elbaf Arc introduced the legendary pirate as his father. Not that it needed to, because the resemblance between the father and son is uncanny. A few decades ago, Rocks was considered the most dangerous pirate in the world. The information about him only tells that it took the combined efforts of Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp, but the truth is far from it.
Unlike his son, Rocks wasn’t inherently evil, and he didn’t seek unnecessary chaos and destruction, nor did he have the desire to take over the world. However, he did want to take down the Holy Land of Mariejois, and he killed an Admiral, which is more than enough to get a massive bounty on his head. After he became a pirate, Rocks was even more of a thorn in the World Government’s side for various reasons, and they did everything they could to put him down.
2) Blackbeard Was Present at the God Valley Incident

The God Valley Incident is turning out to be a lot more crucial than the series originally portrayed it to be. We only saw a brief glimpse at the brutal incident through Kuma’s backstory, but that still didn’t fully explain everything that happened on the fateful day. However, the latest backstory reveals that God Valley is Rocks’ homeland, where he sent his wife and son to be safe.
Since God Valley wasn’t an affiliated kingdom, the mother and son could’ve lived safely without being persecuted by the Marines. However, he never could’ve imagined that the World Government would decide to hold the Native Hunter Competition in God Valley. They killed two birds with one stone by getting rid of an unaffiliated nation and luring Rocks into their trap. At the end of Chapter 1159, we see a two-year-old Blackbeard who is chained up along with his mother, terrified to know what will happen next to them. It creates a significantly more sympathetic image of a character once thought to be One Piece’s true final villain, or at least casts doubts on the scope of his villainy.
1) Blackbeard Belongs to the Legendary Davy Clan

Throughout his journey as a pirate, Rocks kept the truth about his bloodline hidden from everyone. However, when he learned about the horrible fate that awaits the people of God Valley, he couldn’t help but deliberately fall into the World Government’s trap. He only trusted Harald with the information and revealed that his real name is Davy D. Xebec. He is a descendant of the legendary pirate Davy Jones, whose existence is nothing but a myth now, lost in the annals of history.
Chapter 1155 introduces Rocks as a devout worshipper of Davy Jones, but doesn’t drop any hint about the connection between those two. It’s unclear in which era Davy Jones lived, but it could be around the time of the Void Century, since there aren’t any records of him presently. The World Government tried to remove any proof of the clan’s existence, hidden from everyone. Jones’ descendants somehow survived to this day by taking root in the criminal underworld. Being Rocks’ son, Blackbeard belongs to the same clan, which explains why Saturn said his bloodline is special in Chapter 1107.
