Underrated Manga Returns With Devastating Chapter After Lengthy Hiatus (& the End Is Near)

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Yona of the Dawn manga! 16 years after its debut, Kusanagi Mizuho’s beloved Shojo manga, Yona of the Dawn, is currently in its final phase. After releasing Chapter 271 in July 2025, the manga went on an unexpected hiatus and returned three months later. The manga has long entered its Final Arc, but it still needs to tie up several loose ends before bidding farewell to fans. After being forced to leave her castle with Hak, Yona traveled all across the Kouka Kingdom and the neighboring kingdoms to atone for her father’s failure to properly rule the country. The people have been suffering for decades while her father, a pacifist, avoided all conflicts, but even peace comes at a steep price.

With the help of her childhood friend and bodyguard Hak, a young genius Yoon, and the four legendary Dragon Warriors, Yona saves the dying villages one by one. Her arduous journey is coming to an end, and she has long moved into the castle. However, she can’t rest easy until all the people she cares about are safe. Moving back to Hiryuu Castle, the home she was chased out of, hasn’t been easy for either her or her friends. The previous chapter ends on one of the worst cliffhangers to date, as it’s clear Yona and the others are still not safe from the wrath of the Dragon Gods.

Yona of the Dawn Chapter 272 Is the Most Heartbreaking So Far

Although Yona and the Dragon Warriors have made it outside the chalice, Chapter 271 ends after leaving the fates of Hak and Soo-won unknown. While Hak is still trapped inside the chalice, Soo-won’s injuries after being attacked by the Yellow Dragon God are slowly draining his life away. In the latest Chapter 272, the bodies of the Dragon Gods crumbled away, and even their divine protection has disappeared. All the Dragon Warriors lose the parts of their bodies that gave them special power thanks to the Dragon Gods’ blessing.

While the others definitely have it rough, Zeno’s situation is the most severe since his body is distorted and has begun swelling strangely. It’s also uncertain if his body can ever return to normal. Even though he’s barely holding on, he still wishes to save Soo-won since he feels responsible for what happened to him. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely that Shin-ah, Jee-ha, and Kija have escaped the fate of dying at a young age.

Meanwhile, Yona briefly enters a world where she can see the people who have passed on. She sees several of her allies and enemies, all the while desperately hoping that she won’t have to see Hak there. Yona even sees a glimpse of her parents, but she awakens before she can reach out to them. After coming to, she focuses on trying to save Soo-won along with the Dragon Warriors. Before the chapter ends, Hak wakes up in a strange place with clear sky, but the chapter doesn’t reveal where he is. The manga will return with Chapter 273 on October 20th, 2025, likely to explain what happened to him.

Yona of the Dawn Still Needs to Answer Several Questions Before Ending

Considering that Yona didn’t find him in the world of the departed, he is alive somewhere, but where he is and when he returns to her is another matter entirely. Since the finale’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, there’s no guarantee when he will reunite with Yona. Not only that, but the condition of the Dragon Warriors still needs an explanation. While Zeno’s body is in terrible shape, Jee-ha has lost his right leg, Kija’s right arm has disappeared, and Shin-ah has gone blind.

Zeno has been alive for over a thousand years due to the power granted to him by the Yellow Dragon God, so there’s no guarantee what will happen to him once the God has faded away. The same goes for the other three, who were fated to have a shorter life span, but now the tables have turned. Additionally, Soo-won’s Crimson Illness was also caused by the Dragon Gods.

It’s a hereditary illness passed down through King Hiryuu’s descendants, slowly draining their life force and causing their deaths at a young age. The Dragon Gods wanted Hiryuu’s descendants to die in such a way so that their Crimson Dragon King would return to heaven with them. Additionally, the manga still hasn’t explained the sword and shield from the prophecy that are meant to awaken after the four Dragon Warriors are gathered. As the story reaches its finale, we will likely find the answers to these questions before Yona and the others walk their own paths in life.
