In a new interview with GQ Magazine to promote his forthcoming film Side By Side, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure star Keanu Reeves discussed the possibility of bringing back Bill S. Preston, Esquire, and Ted “Theodore” Logan for another adventure through the circuits of time. Not a lot of totally new ground was covered, but the general plot that’s long been rumored–of Bill and Ted having a kind of existential crisis because their music hasn’t yet changed the world–was confirmed, along with some firm details on the story.Asked whether he thinks it would be easy to slip back into the iconic roles, Reeves was somewhat less blindly optimistic than one might expect, admitting, “I don’t know. It’s one thing to think about it, but to perform it…”It was then that he launched into a brief explanation of what might motivate he and Alex Winter to revisit the characters.”One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world,” Reeves explained. “And they haven’t done it. So everybody is kind of like: ‘Where is the song?’ The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future ‘us’ refuses to tell us, and another future ‘us’ blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life. In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.”
