During an interview with MSN Celebrity, actor Tom Hiddleston suggested that he may not return in Marvel's as-yet-untitled sequel to The Avengers, if only to spare audiences Loki fatigue. "I don't know, and that really is the honest answer. I know I've been known for obfuscation in other quarters, but I have no idea," said the actor when asked whether Avengers 2 was in the cards for him. "I haven't spoken to Joss. He's definitely doing it. So I suspect not, only because I think that probably the audiences are tired of Loki being the bad guy. Maybe the Avengers need somebody else to fight. But I'd love to be part of it again." It may not be so much that audiences are tired of Loki; the character has been elevated to fan-favorite status, in no small part because of Hiddleston's performances in Thor and Marvel's The Avengers. It may be more that Marvel wants to keep Hiddleston in their pocket for future Thor sequels and spin-offs if that property continues to succeed. "When I first signed my contract to be in Thor, it was an engagement to be in Thor, and then there were five options potentially for other Marvel movies–so The Avengers is one of them,Thor 2 will be number three," Hiddleston told ComicBook.com back in May. "So after Thor 2 there are a remaining three options to which Marvel can exercise the right to put me in other stuff." While Hiddleston not knowing whether or not he's in the film isn't a guarantee he won't be -- it's pretty early in development, after all -- Whedon reportedly has finished his first outline and Samuel L. Jackson said during one of his recent Django Unchained interviews that he was taking time off between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers 2, suggesting that at least he had already been told he was coming back for the team-up sequel. The smart money is on Whedon having started reaching out to actors whose characters are featured in his initial outline.
