If you’re familiar with any anime series, then it probably is Sailor Moon. The iconic franchise debuted back in 1991 thanks to Naoko Takeuchi when Nakayoshi published the manga’s first issue. More than 20 years later, Sailor Moon stands as one of the most influential shojo series ever created, and it popularized the magical girl sub-genre with fans all over the world.

Given its popularity, an anime was all but guaranteed to happen. In 1992, Toei Animation brought Sailor Moon and her loyal scouts to life in a beloved anime that lives on today. There are now several Sailor Moon anime series out there for fans to enjoy, but each one always comes back to the same set of core heroines. And, at ComicBook.com, we’re ranking the five strongest characters from the Sailor Moon franchise.

Sailor Venus

When it comes to the original scouts, Sailor Venus stands above and beyond. While Sailor Moon’s posse of fierce comrades is not to be messed with, it would take a true fool to trifle with Sailor Venus. The heroine was the first scout to awaken her gifts on Earth, and her past life was just as impressive. Sailor Venus was the one who rallied the scouts to protect Princess Serenity when the Moon Kingdom came under attack. While her physical strength and powers are certainly impressive, it is Sailor Venus’ confidence and willingness to lead when Sailor Moon can’t that makes her an invaluable character in the series.

Sailor Pluto

For a long time, fans of Sailor Moon thought that there were only five scouts, but that belief was quickly done away with when the Outer Solar System shenshi came into town. Planets like Neptune and Uranus were given their own protectors, but it was Sailor Pluto who left fans stunned. The ethereal character was cool, calculated, and entirely dangerous. She wields one of the most powerful weapons ever created since the Garnet Orb is embedded in her staff. The object gives her complete control over time itself, and she will stop at nothing to ensure her timelines stay protect even at the cost of her own life.

Sailor Saturn

In terms of sheer power, Sailor Saturn is hard to overlook. The character was the last shenshi to awaken, and many of the scouts had hoped she never would. As the overseer of life and death, Sailor Saturn could easily destroy worlds and reset evolution with a swipe of her Silence Glaive. In the past, her destructive tendencies had made her a feared presence, and that reputation continued during Sailor Moon’s time. However, her immense power did come at a price; If Sailor Saturn ever used her powers to their fullest potential, she would die and be forcibly reincarnated.

Sailor Galaxia

Though she may not be a heroine, Sailor Galaxia is certainly one of the strongest scouts to ever be introduced in the franchise. The character is one of the final antagonists in Sailor Moon, and she has unlimited power. She is known for destroying planets and sucking power from the various Scout Crystals she has killed for. As the ruler of the Shadow Galactica realm, Sailor Galaxia went so far as toย killย all of Sailor Moon’s comrades only to reanimate them as the girl’sย enemies. She even took outย Prince Endymion in a final attempt to make Sailor Moon submit to her. However, the latter proved the power of love was too pure, and Sailor Galaxia was defeatedย knowing her plans had all been in vain.

Sailor Moon

The strongest character in Sailor Moon is the heroine herself. Though she may not look like it, Sailor Moon is the only person alive who can wield the unruly Silver Crystal, the universe’s source of absolute power. Her material strength is only added to by Sailor Moon’s optimism and purity, and the combination makes her ultimately invincible – even if she is a bit klutzy at times. Aided by her friends, Sailor Moon is the string that ties the universe together and punishes the wicked who hurt others. She doesn’t say she will punish you for kicks and giggles; Sailor Moon means it.
