Arrow: Easter Eggs and DC Comics References In “Beyond Redemption”

Tonight’s episode of Arrow, for as important as it seems to be in the grand scheme of the series, didn’t have a ton of Easter eggs.

And the ones there were? Well, some of them are pretty darn common. But we decided to count ’em anyway, because otherwise, this list would have been much shorter.

So, without further ado…!

So…what did we see? What did we miss? Read on.

LADY COP

That’s not a generic, nameless female cop’s credit as an extra, as much as it might sound that way. “Lady Cop” is how comic book fans might remember Liza Warner, Wesley’s Arrow character and a member of the anti-vigilante task force.

That task force will have its work cut out for it, as the season will start with yet another marked increase in vigilante activity in and around Starling.

In the comics, Warner was the only survivor of the “Killer-in-Boots”, who murdered Warner’s college roommates. The event made her decide to join the police. She stopped several criminals, always driven by a desire to catch the killer who had changed the course of her life.

Warner was later promoted to Chief of Police in Ivy Town, and frequently assisted onetime Atom Ryan Choi…but since she’s not exactly poised to “help” superheroes just yet, it doesn’t necessarily stand to reason that she’ll be buddy-buddy with Ray Palmer on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow anytime soon.

NEAL ADAMS

The Palmer Technologies employee who Curtis Holt believed to be Green Arrow?

Yeah, Neal Adams. 

If that name doesn’t ring a bell, you should go correct that, now. He’s one of the greatest artists ever to grace the pages of Batman and Green Lantern comics, most notably as the artist on Green Lantern/Green Arrow with Dennis O’Neill.

PAPP STADIUM

The baseball stadium Oliver talks about is named after DC Comics artist George Papp, who appears to be the one who first introduced the Arrowcave, Green Arrow’s secret lair, which got a pretty serious upgrade tonight.

YOU HAVE FAILED THIS CITY

Yay! Oliver’s catchphrase!

It doesn’t get as much use these days, especially as some of the threats he’s facing have become more global in scope, but “you have failed this city” seems pretty appropriate for Lady Cop’s issues.

NEWS 52

During Oliver’s mayoral announcement, you can see one of the microphones in the cluster of press mics has the logo on it for “News 52.”

MONOLOGUE

It’s kind of fun — if a little on the nose — that so much of Oliver’s opening monlogue from the credits ends up in his speech announcing his candidacy for mayor.
