After last week’s disappointing box office, many in the movie industry were hoping this weekend would get things back on track. While last weekend fell on such new entries as New Year’s Eve and The Sitter, this weekend offered proven franchises such as Sherlock Holmes, Alvin & The Chipmunks, and Mission Impossible. While things are definitely looking up as Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows took in more on its first day of release, than last week’s top entry New Year’s Eve took in over the entire weekend, both Holmes and the Chipmunks are falling short of expectations. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the Sherlock Holmes sequels’ opening day of $14.7 million is down from the original’s opening day of $24.6 million. Also, Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked’s opening day take of $6.8 million was down from both the original’s $13.3 million and the Squeakquel’s $18.8 million. The one bright spot so far has been Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise took in $4.11 million, despite only opening in 425 locations. Mission: Impossible โ Ghost Protocol has gotten much press recently over the inclusion of The Dark Knight Rises prologue. Given it’s strong third place opening in only limited release, our speculation that Tom Cruise will owe Batman a favor appears to be coming true.
