The Northlake Public Library, about 25 miles from Chicago, want the public’s help to smash illiteracy. And as part of an aggressive campaign to upgrade the library, its collection and its image, they’re hoping to bring an 9′ tall statue of Marvel’s Incredible Hulk to the library as the centerpiece of their graphic novels section. It all feels a bit like when a group of Detroit citizens successfully Kickstarted a statue in tribute of the city’s fictional hero RoboCop, right? Well, that might be why the library has taken their cause to IndieGoGo, a crowdfunding website where they’re asking for $30,000 for the statue, graphic novels and a digital “creation station” featuring an iMac with a drawing pad, editing software, a Cintiq interactive pen display, a 3D printer and an Artograph Light Tracer Elite.”Why The Hulk?” asks the site. “Just as Dr. Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, we want our library community members to make their own personal transformations through books, programs, and awesome new equipment. This larger-than-life literary character will become a giant green beacon of light to highlight our graphic novel collection, our creation station…not to mention the library’s sense of humor and whimsy. The project will show off the fun side of the library and get the community talking. The HULK will force patrons to look at the library in a whole new way.”
