A new Child’s Play direct-to-DVD sequel titled The Curse of Chucky is set to begin production soon, according to Moviehole and Bleeding Cool.Cameras will reportedly begin rolling in September, with Brad Dourif returning as the voice of the titular evil doll and the premise that he’s back again, this time terrorizing a family in mourning. “In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother,” says Moviehole. “When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.”The sequel apparently has scuttled plans by Universal Pictures for a total reboot of the franchise, which was being developed at the same time as the sequel. Presumably a reboot is still in the cards, as it’s difficult to imagine a direct-to-video film being the same kind of draw for the studio. Still, it’s a bit of a “tonal reboot,” with filmmakers telling Moviehole that they’re looking to return the series to its horrifying roots and play down some of the camp value and humor that have filled the last few installments of the series. In spite of a recent spate of reboots and remakes, it appears as though Universal is keen on keeping their old continuity intact; the studio recently moved Jurassic Park 4 forward with a new script coming from writers who recently had success with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. With Chucky in mind, please enjoy Jonathan Coulton’s “Creepy Doll” below.
