This year has seen more classic franchises revisited than ever before with Mad Max, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and more being brought back to the silver screen. Still, there’s no confirmation of another visit to the Gremlins or Goonies worlds.

Over the weekend, we had the chance to catch up with the man responsible for writing both of those iconic films, Chris Columbus, and asked him where those films stand and what he actually wants to see happen. As for Gremlins, a reboot is “in the early stages,” Columbus said. “We’re working with a writer. We’re just trying to work out the story.”

Columbus genuinely cares about the films he has brought to life and become beloved by so many audiences. “I’m very protective of Gremlins and Goonies,” he said before acknowledging that he knows some people want reboots or sequels and some people don’t. “They’re gonna do it with or without me. I just want to be involved in the franchises, if need be.”

As for The Goonies, “I think that’s a little tougher,” Columbus explained. “It’d be great to see. People are clamoring for it. There’s a lot of writers in Hollywood that really want to write the script. It’s a tougher one though. Gremlins are creatures. Gremlins movies are Gremlin driven and the Gremlins haven’t aged 30 years. The original Goonies was based on that cast. They were so great together and we’re 30 years down the road. I don’t know. That’s a bit more of a challenge.”

One of the Goonies cast members has grown so much he’s Thanos, now (Josh Brolin)!

You can check out Columbus’s latest effort when Pixels hits theaters this Friday, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, and Josh Gad.
