Drew Goddard, the screenwriter of The Martian, developed and was the original showrunner for Netflix’s Marvel’s Daredevil series, but he relinquished his showrunner duties to work on a Sinister Six movie for Sony. He’s still an executive producer on Daredevil and is part of the writers room. And in a recent interview, Goddard discussed what the writers goals are with the characters in Season 2.

“We try never to make pushing the boundary the goal,” Goddard told Collider. “If that makes sense. You just do what’s right for the character. I think what’s nice about Netflix is that we have the freedom to be a little more adult. But none of sit in the writers room and say, ‘Let’s shock everyone today.’ You know, that’s not really the goal. It’s more about what the characters are going through. Obviously these characters — Frank [Castle/Punisher], deal with darker, dirtier things.”
