Johns was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1973, and attended Michigan State University. After college, he moved to Los Angeles, where he would work for director Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon) as an intern.
While he dabbled with film at the beginning of his career, Johns fully hit his stride writing comics for DC Comics. He quickly amassed success with his popular run on JSA, and Johns also created the character of Stargirl, who has remained a fan favorite. He would follow that up with numerous critical and commercially successful runs on The Flash, Teen Titans, Action Comics, and Aquaman. He was also responsible for rehabbing two of DC’s icons with Green Lantern Rebirth and Flash Rebirth, returning both Hal Jordan and Barry Allen to prominence.
He would go on to helm event series like Infinite Crisis and Blackest Night, and recently returned to writing for the DC Rebirth Universe one-shot.
After being a staple at DC for some time, Johns has moved up the hierarchy to have a substantial role in DC and Warner Bros. film universe. He was made Chief Creative Officer at DC Entertainment and is also working as an executive producer on Wonder Woman and Black Adam, and a producer on Justice League, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, and The Batman, which he is also co-writing with Ben Affleck.
Johns has also dabbled in television, writing on projects like Smallville, Arrow, and Justice League Unlimited.
