Sanrio, which owns the entire Hello Kitty franchise, plans to release the film by 2019. According to The Japan Times, Sanrio is shooting for a $162 million budget—a goal that will likely require fundraising and external help. In order to launch the film, however, Sanrio plans to open its own U.S.-based subsidiary (they’re currently located in Japan).
This seems to be the next big step for the company, following the launch of the Sanrio Media & Pictures Entertainment Inc. division earlier this summer. With Sanrio Media & Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sanrio plans to launch a robust movie and digital media platform for its animated characters.
