Internet Reacts to First Blade Runner 2049 Trailer

Earlier today, Warner Bros. Pictures get the world an early Christmas gift when it released the very first trailer for Blade Runner 2049. The highly-anticipated film is a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 cult classic and features Harrison Ford (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard.

When the original was released in 1982, people weren’t as concerned about climate change as they are today. Because of that, climate change will have a bigger impact on the sequel. This is evident in the opening shot of the trailer as a futuristic street sweeper is seen hovering over a (toxic) snow-covered L.A. street, melting the fallen snow. As the vehicle moves past the camera, we see LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) gingerly walking behind it.

Aside from those opening shots, Deckard dialogue lifted from the original film is heard: “Replicants are like any other machine, they’re either a benefit or a hazard. If they’re a benefit it’s not my problem.”

We then go beyond L.A., as we see K treking through an orange-tinted wasteland and coming upon a large decapitated head of statue laying in the desert-like landscape. K eventually reaches the heart of this forgotten and sand-covered city, climbs some steps, and enters a building.

The interior of the building gives off a City Hall-like vibe and is remarkably well-maintained. This is where Deckard has been hiding for the past 30 years. K comes across a dust-covered piano and strums a key. Deckard steps out of the shadows with his gun drawn and says to K, “I did your job once. I was good at it.” An composed K replies, “Things were simpler then.”

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

The cast features Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, and Jared Leto.

The sequel to the 1982 original is being directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners). It’s written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove.
