As The Hollywood Reporter cites, Interstellar’s November 5th release was available to only 250 movie theaters across the country, or about 8 percent of the total national box office. The theaters that released Interstellar yesterday were the only ones equipped to showcase the movie on 70 mm and 35 mm film, as per Nolan’s request. All other theaters, which will release the movie today and tomorrow, will project a digital copy.

Given Interstellar’s selective choice in theaters and mid-week release, it’s difficult to draw box office performance comparisons with other films. Paramount Pictures is distributing the film to domestic theaters, while Warner Bros. will distribute the film to international markets.

Interstellar is projected to gross between $50 million and $55 million this weekend. It’s main competition for the weekend is Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6, which is also projected to chart $50-$55 million.
