Prior to the start of tonight’s ginormous Hall H panel featuring The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and nearly the vast majority of The Defenders, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb was awarded an Inkpot Award for his contributions to the television industry.

Clearly caught off-guard, Loeb went on to give an impromptu speech before kicking off the panel.

“Note to Netflix and Marvel, you found a way to shut me up,” Loeb joked.

Inkpot Awards are given annually to those who work within the fields of comic books, science fiction, and pop culture. Traditionally given to comic creators such as writers and artists, the awards have branched out within recent years to include the creators in the booming comic-related entertainment industry.

A humble Loeb continued his thank you speech by saying household-names like Steven Spielberg and Joe Quesada are supposed to get the award.

“I’m just a guy like you guys that are here,” Loeb continued. “Look, I legitimately don’t know what to say other than I love the genre and I urge every single one of you that are here to never give up on your dreams.”

Before being cut off by a surprise appearance by Bernthal to show the first ever clip from The Punisher, Loeb finished with a motivational statement that we should all take to heart.

“Do not ever let anyone tell you cannot achieve what it is that you set out to do and that if they’re going to wake you up from something, tell them to wake you up from a nightmare and not from your dream.”

The Defenders stars Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murdock), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Sigourney Weaver (Alexandra), Elodie Yung (Elektra Natchios), Babs Olusanmokun (Sowande), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Rachel Taylor (Trish Walker), Scott Glenn (Stick), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse), Debbi Morgan (Delores), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page).

Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are all available on Netflix now, while The Defenders is expected later in the year. The Punisher does not currently have a release date. Netflix has announced a second season of Jessica Jones and a third season of Daredevil, but no release dates have been announced for those either.
