That’s right, Sofia will be playing the title role. As long as negotiations go well the 33-year-old actress will become the first female monster in Universal’s The Mummy franchise — following in the footsteps of such as actors as Boris Karloff (1932) and Arnold Vosloo (1999).
THR also backed up Variety’s report from last month that claimed Tom Cruise is in negotiations to star in it as well.
This reboot of The Mummy will be directed Alex Kurtzman and be based on a script by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange), which one entertainment website claimed to have read and went on to royally pan. That’s not good to hear when so much is riding on this movie. The Mummy is the first film Universal’s planned cinematic universe of classic movie monsters that will also include Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and the Bride of Frankenstein.
The Mummy reboot is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
