In the trailer, fans see plenty gritty footage of pilots going toe-to-toe in the vastness of space. The series gained praise from Gundam fans because it showed how brutal and violent the front lines of war could be. The spin-off series takes place in the same time period as the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, and it features some fairly impressive Gundam suits.

In the first season, fans were teased with a prototype of the Full Armor Gundam which fans met in the original series. Bandai’s Visual trailer shows off another suit which fans have been waiting to see: Atlas Gundamm. The immensely powerful suit can be identified by its spherical joints and lean limbs. Piloted by Io Flemming, Atlas Gundam can be seen wreaking havoc amongst Zeon’s force in the new Thunderbolt trailer – and fans are beyond excited.

The trailer also includes a tagline which teases, “The war is not over yetโ€ฆ”

If you are not familiar with Thunderbolt, then you should know the spin-off series debuted last December and wrapped earlier this spring. Fans were hopeful a second season would debut and tell more stories sourced from Yasuo Ohtagaki’s Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga.

As mentioned, the series is set during the same time as the original Gundam series. The story follows pilots during the One Year War as the Earth Federation’s Moore Brotherhood fends off the Principality of Zeon’s Living Dead Division. The latter division has declared their independence from Earth Federation, and they’ve laid waste to humanity with its mobile suits.

In Thunderbolt, the series specifically focuses on the skirmishes between Moore and Zeon in a wayward sector. The seedy zone is a lawless one littered with space debris and abandoned colonies, but the Zeon Division covets the route because of its trade possibilities. However, Moore is not giving up their territory without a fight, and pilot Io Fleming takes on Zeon’s Daryl Lorenz with aggression.

If you need to catch-up on the series, then you can watch the series online or through home video. The first season has been released on Blu-ray with a director’s cut called Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky.
