The film has big aspirations, and if successful will be the breakthrough many have been waiting for when it comes to video game to film translations, though it could be argued that overseas at least, that breakthrough already came in Warcraft.

FOX has released a few new photos of star Michael Fassbender (via The Playlist), which features the actor both in the past as Assassin Aguilar and in the present as death row inmate Callum Lynch. You can view the new photos in the gallery.

While the goal is always to receive a positive return on investment, profit isn’t the main goal for Ubisoft, the developer who created the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

“We [Ubisoft] are not going to earn a lot of money from it. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand,” Corre told MCVUK. “Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games.”

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed debuts in theaters on December 21st.
