Sony Pictures has provided Entertainment Weekly with the first batch of stills from The Dark Tower, which is based on Stephen King’s series of novels.

The first image provide us with a look at Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), a supernatural gunslinger who is hunting down The Man in Black, the person responsible for killing everyone he ever loved and decimating Mid-World. The next image has Roland holding his custom-made six-shooters which were forged from the mythical sword Excalibur. You’ll also notice that he’s standing in front of “an altar to the Crimson King, a demented entity who will be unleashed if the ethereal Tower that binds time and space ever falls.”
The next trio of images focus on Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a young man in present day New York who is haunted by visions and nightmares of “a foreboding tower, a man of shadows, figures with shifting faces, a shimmering red rose, trapped children, and doorways that stand all by themselves, with nothing in front or behind but whole other worlds in between.”
“Everybody around him thinks he’s crazy and he probably even thinks he’s a little bit crazy,” director and co-writer Nikolaj Arcel told EW. “He’s having visions of this big, grand tower that binds everything and holds all the universes together, and he’s having visions of this one man, Roland, the Gunslinger that’s calling out to him.”
Portals will allow characters to travel between worlds. In the fifth image, we see Jake in a “decrepit Brooklyn mansion known as Dutch Hill, which literally roars to life around any intruder who tries to pass through its gateway.”
We also get a look at Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black, an well-dressed enforcer for the Crimson King. In order to topple the tower and free his master, he must capture psychics
“The Devil’s a handsome man,” McConaughey said. “I’ve seen the pale Devil.” He shook his head. “No, no, no. I’ve seen the Nosferatic Devil — no. I said, ‘Black suit, black coat — let’s look really sharp.’”

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum.It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.
The film stars Idris Elba stars as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black. The cast also includes Kathryn Winnick, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, Claudia Kim, Tom Taylor, and Jackie Earle Haley.
The Dark Tower film is shooting now for a January 13, 2017 release.
