NYCC 2017: Comic Book Men Live Panel Updates

ComicBook.com is live at the New York Comic Con event spread between the Javits Center, Madison Square Garden, and the Hammerstein Ball Room. The four-day event will cover topics from Nickelodeon to Netflix and everywhere in between with live panels, celebrity interviews, breaking news and more.

1:15 pm — Hammerstein Ballroom is filling up pretty quickly. Line is down the block (as usual)… DJ is playing on the main stage to keep energy high. We still have about 15 minute until the panel is slated to start.

1:28 — Five-person competition to name super heroes until there were none left and none copied went down to the wire, when the lady on stage ran through the Sailor Moon character list as the gentleman on stage fizzled out on traditional heroes.

1:38 — Still no sign of Smith and the guys… audience is growing a litttttttle restless, though the DJ is spinning some legit mixes.

1:40 — Fairly sure this is the same hockey jersey, hat combo from last year for Kevin Smith…

1:41 — Turning on the sizzle reel for Season 7:

Highlights — Opens with a lot of Kevin Smith with a lot of adjectives to describe it.

1:50 pm — Smith is discussing that on network TV, there is a five minute segment about C-3POs “man parts” will be featured and takes joking credit for that…. then brings out everyone.

1:51pm — For Walter, I am a book sniffer, too… What did SuperMan No. 1 smell like?

Walter: The wonderful smell of your grandma’s attic… something like old paper that can not be replicated. 

Kevin: It was Action Comics, No. 1.. not to be that guy, but, let’s get that one right.

Question for Kevin, You had Jason on the Flash… when are you going to get cameos for these guys…

Kevin: Id love to but I do CWs shows and those people are under-30 and stunning. These guys are aged out of that world right now… Walter will never will get to do anything becuase he wouldnt fly to Vancouver. 

All the guys say they would do it, if asked. 

I was going to summon the Baron, but he isnt here… My question is when is Monster Dick going to come back?

Walter: From the podcast… that is the back story… it is called Two Live Crew or One Middle Aged Jew. So we play where they play real lyrics and then let someone make up lyrics… anyways… there is a girl who took all the clips and made a rap song for it about a man who wants to have sex with all the monsters. It isnt about dick size, it is about wanting to get busy with Dracula… 

Whats going on with the rest of Widening Gyre?

Kevin: I want to finish it, but I get busy. I promise we will finish it this year. 

Being in a confined space for so long, what is the longest running arguement that you are still having?

Walter: Longest argument is that you two are married… 

Brian: We dont really have them. There arent many peeves about one another. We are genuinely friends. There isnt going to be anything in the rags to read about because we are really tight. 

Q&A Continues From the Floor

2:01 — When are you guys going to re-release Dogma, it is like $53 on Amazon.

Kevin: The Weinstein Company owns it wholly so it is on them. However, I talked to those guys and they want to renew the deal. Harvey called me up about it actually, and said, ‘Hey we need to do something about this… and maybe make a Dogma 2″ .. I told him, “F^ck no, I dont think we need a Dogma 2 and I am sure as sh!t not going near a religious movies at this point. If you wanna watch it, just hit YouTube.”

Question for Brian: You have been pretty vocal that podcasting and television has been to your mental health… and I remember you talking about putting the stool away, I understand that place in life… does that high of doing the podcast doing every day as a support system still do it for you?

Brian: I have bi-polar too, so I may just be on a high right now, but yes the podcast keeps me going. I know that once a week I can sit down and talk to these guys. It makes things easier, not because I dont know of its popularity, but because I stuck to it and it is part of my life. I dont think the high is because of the actual high, it is because of being with all of these guys. 

Kevin tells a very intimate story about mental health and how he had to interact with Big on the system…. telling Brian, man take your mind off it, go record a podcast and Brian said, ‘Yeah, thats the cure for death.

Kevin talks for 22 minutes about random film school stuff, unprompted… 

2:24 — the girl at the microphone uses the chance to talk about being on Kevin’s production team… 

Kevin: Pre-production on the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot in Louisiana will start the first week of January and we will start shooting probably the first week of February. So we will be staffing up in late-December, so if you are interested in joining up follow my twitter feed because we will be starting that around that time.

2:31 — I am jumping on the Brian Johnson love bus… he got me into Rick and Morty, and I fell in love with it.

Kevin: HA, me too… cuz he is Rick Sanchez. Everything he says and does is Rick, but without a portal gun!

2:33 — Is there a dream guest you would like on Comic Book Men?

All: Henry Wrinkler. 

Kevin: HA, that isn’t my answer, but apparently those guys are all about it. Why don’t you guys try to get him on the show.

Brian: I tried. Man, I wrote him a letter and tried to guilt him into it with some special needs stuff because he is really into that, but he didnt even reply. 

Kevin: My dream guest is, honestly, a lot of my journey is all about geekdom so, it probably started with George Lucas and so that is where my answer is. It’s not going to f^cking happen, but hey, that is mine.
