Oz the Great and Powerful box office

In what’s the third-highest opening ever in the month of March, Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful opened at more than $80 million this weekend ($150 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo) to lead the box office and give 2013 its first really big opening. That $80 million cost more than the next 19 movies on the top twenty combined, with more than $20 million to spare, so the rising hot air balloon did not lift all bottom lines here. Jack the Giant Slayer was the only other film to break the $10 million mark, and it did so with $10,020,000 so it’s not as though that was decisive. The film dropped more than 63% over last week, when it was the nation’s top film.Identity Thief, Dead Man Down and Snitch rounded out the top five with between $5 million and $7 million each.
