Lantica is financing the film, which will begin production at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios in March 2016.
Zorro is the pulp hero creatied by Johnston McCulley in 1919. The character traditionally fought the corrupt government in Spanish-controlled California, on behalf of the downtrodden populace. The character is seen as an early prototype of the masked vigilante-hero archetype, including Batman (who, in some versions of his origin, saw a Zorro movie just before the murder of his parents).
Reborn will reportedly keep the masked vigitlante fighting corruption angle, but change the setting to a dark near future.
Zorro Reborn has been in development hell for some time, previously being in development at Fox with names like Bryan Singer attached.
The new producers are currently searching for a director.
“This has been a fifteen year journey filled with ups and downs but it has remained my passion project over the years,” said Sobini CEO Mark Amin told THR.
“Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we’re proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation,” said Lantica CEO Antonio Gennari.
