Longtime Power Rangers fan will likely notice that the costumes are both lycra and spandex free. Despite the material upgrade, director Dean Israelite believes the suits speak to the classic mythology of the long-running franchise.
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” Israelite tells EW. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
The filmmakers are hoping that the suit designs help separate the new Power Rangers from other big action franchises.
“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies says. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
