Cartoon fans, today could be a dark day for some of you. Last year, plenty of fans were elated to hear that Nickelodeon was preparing to mine a slew of its most nostalgic shows. From Rugrats to Rocko’s Modern Life, a handful of iconic cartoon characters were reported to star in an animated NickToons film overseen by both Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures.

However, in a recent appearance, an animator who worked with Ren and Stimpy said the anthropomorphic friends would not star in the film. And, naturally, fans are not taking the news too well.
Recently, Bob Campappeared at Wizard World Cleveland and spoke to ScreenGeek about the upcoming NickToons movie. It was there that he said Ren and Stimpy would not be included in the feature with Nickelodeon’s other titles.
“They’re rebooting the Nicktoons without Ren and Stimpy,” Camp said.
“We actually pitched a Ren and Stimpy movie to Paramount, they wanted nothing to do with it. [Adult Party Cartoon] poisoned the well. I think it really left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. I had nothing to do with that one. And now, someone [at Paramount] doesn’t want anything to do with Ren and Stimpy.”
Of course, Camp is not wrong about the reception of “Adult Party Cartoons.” The series was created for Spike under new animators, and it lived a very short life due to declining ratings and unfavorable reviews. The raunchy, innuendo-filled show was an adult-only revival of Ren and Stimpy that just didn’t stick with long-time fans. Only three episodes of the show aired before it was cut off, leaving another three left in the wind. The series failed to live up to Chris Kricfalus’ take on the ragtag duo.
Currently, the NickToons movie is said to be overseen by Jared Hess. The director will co-write the script alongside Jarusha Hess. The pair have previously worked on films such as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Cale Boyter of Disruption and Mary Parent will produce the feature.
