Riverdale has officially been renewed for a second season, The CW announced today. The adaptation of Archie Comics‘ flagship series follows Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica, and many more through a rabbit hole of murder, secrets, and intrigue. The series has been a modest ratings hit for the network, and has accumulated a passionate following of Archie fans and newbies alike.

In recent years, The CW has become known for its DC Comics slate of shows, including Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. The network is also home to the Vertigo series iZombie, and has plans to add a fifth DC show with the upcoming Black Lightning.
Because of this, Riverdale‘s inclusion and subsequent success on the network has been a nice change of pace, returning the network to its teen drama days of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill, while still keeping in touch with their current trend of comic-based storytelling.
Riverdale’s renewal seemed all but inevitable with the news of a development deal between Archie Comics and Warner Brothers. The deal will cover multiple shows based on modernized characters from across the Archie Comics slate, and it is safe to assume they will be part of a sort of shared universe with Riverdale.
Besides strong social media buzz, the series has already spawned a comic book spinoff and a porn parody.
While Riverdale’s season one arc – which centers around the murder of Jason Blossom – is expected to be resolved at the end of the first season, there are sure to be plenty of unanswered questions that will lead into the sophomore season.
Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, and Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. The series also stars Luke Perry, Madchen Amick, Marisol Nichols, Casey Cott, and Stranger Things‘ Shannon Purser.
