When asked by a reader if there will follow up film to Resurgence he responded, “If it’s successful enough, yes, because it’s set up for a sequel. In 20 years? No, I wouldn’t want to make it with a Zimmer frame!” While sequel’s are infamous for not making anywhere near their original, the 1996 Independence Day made $817 Million worldwide and currently is number 55 in the all time box office according to BoxOfficeMojo.com
Emmerich also crushes the ‘myth’ that Independence Day was originally a Stargate sequel saying, “That’s one of the myths out there. There’s no overlap between those two worlds.”
According to the Q&A there will be no more miniature White House’s actually blowing up – it’s almost all CG. “The only practical effect in this one is the alien tentacle around the neck, because it’s very hard to do it digitally. It was always magical working with models, but it’s actually too expensive now.”
The Empire piece also touches upon how he never wanted to make a sequel to the original ID and give a bit of info on future plans for Stargate.
No word unfortunately if Will Smith’s character is actually alive or might appear as a cameo. Even one of the viral websites that Fox started declared his character dead:
While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.
Emmerich is currently doing a guest editing gig at the website and magazine as part of the promotion for the ID sequel.
