Speaking to MTV at the Sundance Film Festival, actress Shailene Woodley talked about the potential of her returning to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 3:
“I don’t know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two ‘Divergent’ films, I don’t know how I’d keep my sanity with two big action films in one year…But, anything can happen, so…”
The film that Woodley is referring to is Allegiant, the third in a planned trilogy of films based on the Divergent trilogy of novels. Both Allegiant and Amazing Spider-Man 3 are planned for release in 2016, meaning that they would likely run into a scheduling conflicts while in filming.Woodley was originally cast in the role of Mary Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After three days of shooting, director Marc Webb decided to cut her character from the movie entirely as part of an attempt to streamline the movie’s story.Woodley leaves the door open to potentially get back onboard with the franchise despite the potential scheduling issues. It might seem unlikely, but not too long ago people were wondering how Jennifer Lawrence was going to manage to do both Days of Future Past and Catching Fire and she seemed to make that work, so anything is possible. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for theatrical release May 2, 2014.
