After Real Steel debuted in 2011, fans of the film quickly began wondering whether a sequel was in store. DreamWorks confirmed it was looking into a sequel in April of that year, and writer John Gatins was asked to write the script. However, there has been little word on the much-anticipated film – until now.
In a recent interview with Collider, director Shawn Levy spoke about the possible sequel and said he was still open to the idea. In fact, he even explained which storylines he’d like to see explored in Real Steel 2.

“One area that I still would love to explore is that notion of how was Atom built?” he said. “What is it about his design that might have embedded some artificial or organic intelligence and consciousness, such that he is self-aware to some extent?”
He continued, saying, “All I’ll say is, we’ve attempted it a few times with a number of writers, and no draft got me, Hugh, and Steven all there to a yes in the same moment. It all felt like it wasn’t quite enough to promise a new story and a new movie. I have to tell you, I had a weird experience watching it tonight because on one hand it felt really good to revisit an old friend, but it also weirdly cemented my conviction that I just shouldn’t make a sequel unless I’m sure it will be better.”
If you aren’t familiar with Real Steel, then you should know the sci-fi drama came out a few years back. Starring Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly, Real Steel tells the story of a washed-up boxer named Charlie Kenton who discovers an forgotten sparring robot known as Atom. In a world where boxers have all been replaced by robotic substitutes, Charlie uses Atom in arranged fights and goes through a journey of self-discovery after meeting the bot.
After being released, Real Steel grossed more than $299 million at the worldwide box office. The family friendly film has left fans wishing that Atom would make a comeback, and it definitely sounds like Levy is still game for the feature.
Now, it’s just a matter of working out Hugh Jackman’s notoriously packed schedule. After all, the actor does have his final Wolverine flick to worry about these days.
