Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will play Black Adam, traditionally depicted as the archenemy of Shazam/Captain Marvel, in the film, which is likely to hit theaters on April 5, 2019.

Since Shazam himself hasn’t been cast yet, and Warner Bros. keeps referring to Black Adam as an antihero, it seems at this early stage that the character will play a major — perhaps the lead — role in the story. In that case, it’s likely one of the handful of key Black Adam stories written by DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns in the comics may be adapted in part or in full. It’s likely Johns’s affection for the character who elevated him — and possibly even Johns who made Shazam a viable property for cinemas, thirty years after his last mass media outing and twenty years after his last ongoing comic book series.
