They report: “Although story details are being kept tightly under wraps, original Saw director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell will serve as executive producers on the project.”
Saw is the largest grossing (pure) horror franchise of all time (excluding Alien and Resident Evil). The seven Saw films have combined for $875M at the worldwide box office. What makes it truly remarkable is that all seven films cost a mere $64M to produce (minus marketing). HUGE (as Donald Trump would say) profits!
The last film in the series, Saw 3D (aka The Final Chapter), was released in 2010 and grossed $136M globally (fourth best in the franchise).
The franchise is known for forcing characters to participate in life or death games or traps that were designed to torture the victims physically or psychologically. The series began with John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, pulling the strings, but he was killed off in the third film. However, he did appear in future installments via flashbacks.
As for Goldfinger and Stolberg, they previously worked together on Sorority Row (2009) and Piranha 3D (2010).
